In a pickle

THE LOWDOWN

Our client at The Gherkin was beginning to feel glazed over by their glazed office manifestation, and decided it was time for a change. Their old workspaces were made up of fully frosted glass, with large solid manifestations covering both the inside and outside of each office, blocking out a lot of the natural light afforded by a prime spot in London’s skyline. Our task was therefore to strip roughly 800 window panels and implement a cleaner look; prioritising an open plan feel over privacy, and refreshing the space with a simple double strip design – two lines curving around the corridors to create a streamlined appearance. Before we could win the work, we provided a competitive quote and committed to undertaking the job over the course of several weekends, and with that view of the City, we were more than happy to.

THE SPECS

We were asked to work out of hours while keeping the space functional for business as usual during the week. So with breakfast, tools and a trusted collective of contractors in tow, we headed to The Gherkin in the early hours of every Saturday, and spent around 1100 hours across three months completing the project, which spanned seven floors. There was also the added challenge of only being allowed on site for eight hours a day, and the curvature of the building’s architecture, which made the application of each strip of vinyl that little bit finickier. The attention to detail really paid off – resulting in a quality finish, a happy client, and a slicker skyscraper.
